Is a tandem faster than a normal bike?
Performance. Compared to a conventional bicycle, a tandem has double the pedalling power, without necessarily doubling the speed, and with only slightly more frictional loss in the drivetrain. It has about the same wind resistance as a conventional bicycle. Tandems don’t go up hills as quickly as solo bikes unless the riders can manage to pedal out of the saddle in perfect unison. Some can; most can’t. In that case, stick to pedalling while sitting down, shift to a lower gear, and accept that you’ll make up ground when you get over the brow of the hill.
Is there such a thing as a tandem electric bike?
A tandem electric bike is essentially a bicycle built for two riders, working together in a synchronized pedaling motion, but with the added benefit of an integrated electric motor. This motor provides pedal assistance, making it easier to maintain maximum speeds with less individual effort from each rider. Big and clunky. The tandem bike is anything but gracious riding. The bike is longer and heavier which makes it unhandy. Keeping the balance, starting at the same time and riding is a lot more challenging with an extra person on your back seat.
